Interesting Facts About Mothers Day

This year Mother’s Day (Or Mothering Sunday as we also like to call it) is on Sunday 30th March 2025.

Mothering Sunday, as it was traditionally known, falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent. Historically, it was a day when people would return to their “mother church,” the main parish church in their area, for a special service.

This practice dates back to the medieval period and was a time for families to reunite and give thanks. Over time, Mothering Sunday evolved beyond its religious significance to become a day to honor mothers and maternal figures.

Mother’s Day, as celebrated today, has its roots in ancient civilizations such as the Greeks and Romans, who held festivals honoring mother goddesses like Rhea and Cybele.

However, the modern iteration of Mother’s Day can be traced back to early Christian traditions in Europe. During the 16th century, the holiday was called “Mothering Sunday” in the United Kingdom, where people returned to their mother church, the main church or cathedral in their area, for a special service. This tradition gradually evolved into a day for children to honor their mothers with small gifts and flowers.

The modern celebration of Mother’s Day in the UK owes much to the efforts of social activist Ann Reeves Jarvis in the United States during the 19th century. Her work inspired her daughter Anna Jarvis to campaign for a national day to honor mothers. While Mother’s Day in the US was established in 1914, its UK counterpart continued to be observed on Mothering Sunday.

Today, Mother’s Day in the UK typically involves children expressing their love and appreciation for their mothers through heartfelt gestures such as cards, flowers, and gifts. Families often come together to share meals and create lasting memories. It’s a time to celebrate the unconditional love and support that mothers provide, acknowledging their tireless dedication and sacrifices.

The significance of Mother’s Day extends beyond biological mothers to include stepmothers, grandmothers, and other maternal figures who play a vital role in nurturing and shaping lives. It’s a day to recognize and honor the profound impact that women have on families and society as a whole.

Whilst flowers are always a favourite for mother’s around the world, you could also consider:

  • Chocolates
  • Jewellery
  • Gift Vouchers
  • A Meal Out
  • Candles
  • Wine or Champagne

In the US, Mother’s day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May.

In 2024, the date of Mother’s day in the USA is Sunday 12th May 2024.

Mother’s Day is not a public (bank) holiday in the United Kingdom. However, it is widely celebrated and many people take the opportunity to spend quality time with their mothers or maternal figures, including by the gifting of flowers.
